The definition of the ideal hotel really depends on what you want out of your break. Maybe you are on the way to an exotic expedition into spirituality and colour- like in Marrakesh- or you are just hoping for a quiet, meditative weekend of relaxation in beautiful spa surroundings an hour away from where you live. There is more than one kind of hotel, just as there is more than one kind of traveller. What kind of traveller are you?

1. The contented luxuriant. This kind of traveller needs nothing more than a nice, fluffy white robe, some good free smellies in the bath and the chance to have a newspaper delivered to the door. They have an appreciation for the finer things in life, including the fabulousness of a massage, full facial, mani-pedi and a few cosmopolitans (if it's not too much to ask). The right kind of setting for this person is anywhere 4 stars and above, with a sauna, Jacuzzi and gorgeous masseuses / masseurs on call. Oh, and a nicely stocked mini bar which includes chocolate.

2. The sporty Spartan. Although this breed of traveller does like to take in the occasional treatment, you should be careful not to confuse them with the contented luxuriant. This type is more likely to take the seaweed wraps in an altogether more literal sense, in the bracing wild outdoors, with locally sourced mud masks. There's no need for a soft mattress, when harder beds are better for the back and you are going to be up at the crack of dawn for mountain climbing, followed by a bracing dip in the icy plunge pool to get the circulation flowing.

3. The cheeky club: 18-30s Euro hoppers. These are the types to whom there is no such thing as a relaxing evening in with an early night. Most likely to be found on the beach or poolside during the day, they swap water polo for drinking games when the sun goes down, and gather on the dance floor to check out the opposite sex. Most of the time a self catering apartment is all that is needed, decoration can be plain, it's all about location, location, location - i.e. stumbling distance from the bars.

4. The cool metropolitan. Style is important to this last group, since culture is their middle name. This is the kind who likes to take full advantage of the continental breakfast before getting into their itinerary of galleries, shopping, museums, local fiestas and lunch at a darling little bistro with friends. This kind of hotel is preferably art deco / nouveau, with an original cage lift, award winning restaurant and some eccentric, artist guests.

Of course, there are plenty of other kinds of traveller out there, but if you do recognise yourself as one of the above, find the right hotel and you might just be able to meet them all.
