Everyone, except for the very lucky among us, have had some sort of booking mishap before. I am not talking about realising that you have turned up at the airport a full day after the plane has left because you misread the time and date. That would be your own fault. No I mean being misled by marketing into thinking you were going somewhere more lovely than you actually were.
There are several warning signs to look out for:
The Fawlty Tower. Yes, it's true that the English are not always the most hospitable. But this kind of hotel describes rice crispies and jam as a continental breakfast- even though you had imagined croissants, ham and emmenthal cheese. You soon realise that room service means that they'll bring you a sandwich up, if you're lucky, when the restaurant is open between the hours of 7pm and 8pm. Best way to deal with it? Don't mention the war.
The Euro hostel. Hostels are an excellent way to see the sites of a new city without breaking the bank. But sometimes it turns out that the description of "lively, friendly, bijoux" accommodation means that you're sharing a postage stamp sized room with bunk beds, with 4 Japanese strangers, on the parade route of the local fireworks and horns festival. Best way to deal with it? Make friends with your roommates and borrow a trumpet...
The award winning hotel of the future. Maybe alarm bells should have started ringing when there was only an artist's impression of the compound in the holiday brochure, but they didn't. Now you find that only half of the hotel is finished, and your room overlooks a building site. Best way to deal with it? Keep the earplugs from the flight to block out the noise of the diggers, and take advantage of the fact that the bar is finished. Failing that, spend all your time at the 6 star hotel down the road and only return for sleep and fresh clothes.
There are plenty of wonderful hotels and destinations to take advantage of when booking a holiday. Make sure you read the descriptions carefully and see as many pictures as possible. Check out the reviews to get a balanced and hopefully truthful idea of what to expect. And if all else fails, remember your sense of humour! It could be a whole new way of holidaying you never knew about.
This was published by Chrissie Mason on behalf of Richmond Hill Hotel, one of the Richmond hotels. Just seven miles from London, this is a hidden gem of a hotel near Wembley.
